On October 26, 1997, Italy officially entered the Schengen system, so ending a steady adjustment process to the Visa single policy as stated in the Schengen Treaty Application Principles.
Such Treaty not only increased controls across EU borders, but at the same time it eased EU domestic controls until total, free circulation was achieved within Schengen Treaty Countries: it was thus accomplished the so called “Schengen AREA”.
